AI Meets the Everything App
Notion has been many things, note-taking app, project manager, wiki, database, and now it's adding AI to all of them. Notion AI is integrated throughout the platform, offering writing assistance, data analysis, and automated workflows. But does embedding AI into your workspace actually save time, or is it just another feature to learn?
What Notion AI Does
Notion AI appears in several forms throughout the application:
AI Writer: Highlight text and ask AI to edit, summarize, translate, change tone, or continue writing. Works in any text block.
Q&A: Ask questions about your Notion workspace and get answers synthesized from your pages, databases, and documents. "What decisions were made in last week's product meeting?" returns answers with links to source pages.
Autofill: In databases, AI can automatically populate fields based on other data. A bug tracking database can auto-classify priority, estimate effort, and suggest assignees based on the issue description.
AI Templates: Pre-built templates that use AI to generate content. Meeting notes templates that auto-summarize action items, project briefs that fill in based on your inputs.
Where It Saves Time
The clearest uses are meeting notes (summaries and action items), first drafts from bullet points, routine database categorization with Autofill, and Q&A over workspace pages. How much time that saves depends on how much of a team's work already lives in Notion; this briefing does not publish measured savings.
What Works Well
Summarization is Notion AI's strongest capability. It reliably condenses long documents, meeting notes, and research into concise summaries. The quality is consistently good enough to use without heavy editing.
Q&A is genuinely useful for teams with large Notion workspaces. Finding information trapped in old pages and databases is a real productivity drain, and AI Q&A solves it surprisingly well.
Translation is seamless for teams working across languages. Pages can be translated on-the-fly with reasonable accuracy.
What Doesn't Work
Creative writing: Notion AI produces generic, corporate-sounding content. For anything requiring a distinctive voice or creative angle, you'll spend as much time editing as you would have spent writing from scratch.
Complex analysis: Asking Notion AI to analyze trends in your database or draw conclusions from multiple data sources produces surface-level observations. It identifies obvious patterns but misses nuance.
Accuracy on specific facts: When answering questions about your workspace content, Notion AI occasionally gets details wrong or conflates information from different pages. Verification is necessary for anything important.
Pricing
Notion AI costs $10/member/month, added to your existing Notion subscription. For a team of 10, that's $100/month.
Is it worth it? For teams that live in Notion (using it daily for documentation, project management, and collaboration), yes. As arithmetic only: if each of ten members saved 30 minutes a week, that would be about 20 hours a month across the team.
For individuals or teams that use Notion lightly, the value proposition is weaker. The AI features are most valuable at scale, when there's substantial content for Q&A to search and numerous repetitive tasks for AI to streamline.
The Verdict
Notion AI is a solid productivity enhancer that delivers real but modest time savings. It's not transformative. You won't 10x your productivity. But the 30-60% time savings on routine tasks like meeting notes, content drafts, and information retrieval add up to meaningful value over time.
Rating: 7.5/10: Genuinely useful for teams already invested in Notion, but not a reason to switch from another platform. The AI capabilities are good, not great, and work best for routine tasks rather than complex or creative work.
