How these rows are produced

Once a month a script compares the index against three sources and writes one dated row for each difference it can prove. New tools and catalogue prices come from the softwares.com catalogue, dated by the catalogue record. Prices we check by hand are re-read from the vendor’s own pricing page. Every tool’s website is fetched twice, ten minutes apart: a domain that no longer exists, a shutdown notice on the product’s own home page, or a redirect to a different company’s site has to show up both times before it is listed here. Timeouts, bot walls and broken deep links are held back for a person to check, not published.

A discontinued tool keeps its page, marked with the date and the evidence, and leaves every ranking on the site. See the methodology for how tools are scored.
